چکیده

Eleven patients with intractable trigeminal neuralgia were treated by posterior fossa microvascular decompression. Complete pain relief was achieved in 7 patients (63.3%). Partial relief of symptoms was noted in 3 patients (27%). There was no operative mortality. Two patients developed transient lower cranial nerve palsies whereas one patient developed a CSF leak, requiring treatment by lumbar drain. Compared to ablative procedures, microvascular decompression is an effective and safe method of treatment for trigeminal neuralgia.

Background: Trigeminal neuralgia is a common disorder with well established diagnostic characteristics. Remission of symptoms with carbamazepine seems diagnostic, however, cases who failed to respond might advise surgery. In the present study, we investigate postoperative complications and outcomes in a group of Iranian patients referring with trigeminal neuralgia during a 10-year period. Mat...

HEMIFACIAL SPASM: A RERORT OF 100 CASES TREATED BY MICROVASCULAR DECOMPRESSION

100 patients with hemifacial spasm treated by microvascular decompression are presented. There were 60 females and 40 males. Their ages ranged from 29 to 75 years with a median age of 54 years, and the left side was involved predominantly. The common focal signs were facial nerve palsy in 41 cases, diminished hearing in 14 cases, trigeminal neuralgia in 11 cases, and homolateral trigeminal...

Idiopathic bilateral trigeminal neuralgia treated by bilateral microvascular decompression.

Idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia is the most common type of cranial neuralgia. Trigeminal neuralgia is a form of facial pain characterized by proximal lancinating pain confined to the somatosensory distribution of the trigeminal nerve. Bilateral trigeminal neuralgia is a rare situation with an incidence of 1% to 6% in large trigeminal neuralgia series. There is no single or standard method for t...

Vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia as a cause of trigeminal neuralgia: the role of microvascular decompression. Case report.

Our purpose is to report a case of trigeminal neuralgia caused by vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia treated with microvascular decompression. A 63-year-old man sought treatment for a recurrent lancinating left facial pain in V2 and V3 trigeminal territories. The computed tomography angiography revealed a mechanical compression of the left trigeminal nerve due to vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia. The...

HOW I DO IT Surgical technique for trigeminal microvascular decompression

Background Microvascular decompression (MVD) is a non-ablative technique designed to resolve the neurovascular conflict responsible for typical idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia (TN). Method With the patient in a supine position, a small elliptical retrosigmoid craniectomy is used to approach the cerebellopontine angle and the trigeminal nerve. After careful exploration of the trigeminal root ent...
